Accomodation & Rent

Know what your rent actually includes

Accommodation is normally the largest expense in a student budget.

Before comparing properties, check exactly what is included.

A cheaper-looking property may cost more overall if you have to pay separately for:

  • Gas
  • Electricity
  • Water
  • Broadband
  • Insurance
  • Laundry
  • Transport to university

University halls sometimes include many of these costs within the rent.

Private accommodation may not.

Compare the total cost rather than just the advertised weekly rent.

Check payment dates

Rent payments do not always line up neatly with student finance payments.

Make sure you know:

  • How much your rent is
  • When each payment is due
  • How many weeks or months your contract covers
  • Whether bills are included

Put rent dates into your budget before deciding how much money you have available for other things.
